NDF Implementing Cultural Voice: The DREAMS Project. NDF is one of Mildmay Uganda’s Implementing Partners on the DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe) Initiative in 5 Districts: Bukomansimbi, Gomba, Mubende, Mityana and Ssembabule.
The DREAMS goal is to reduce HIV infection among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 10-24 in HIV priority areas in Uganda and nine (9) other African nations, which in 2014, accounted for nearly half of the new global HIV infections among AGYW.
The DREAMS project also aims at reducing gender-based violence and poverty and encourages girls to stay in school.
NDF mobilized and targeted cultural leaders from Buganda Kingdom at the County and Village levels, sensitizing them on the vulnerability of the adolescent girls and young women in their areas to HIV/AIDS. NDF persuaded the cultural leaders to create safe spaces for the AGYW and provided training to AGYW and the male partners of AGYWs on healthy humanness (Obuntubulamu), cultural practices that predispose AGYW to HIV and how to mitigate them, as well as interpersonal communication and self-awareness.
During the various dialogues held, health services such as Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC), HIV testing/counselling and family planning, among others were provided.
