World Vision and Buganda partner to end violence against children

World Vision Uganda has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Buganda Kingdom to work together to end violence against children. This partnership will be spearheaded by the Nnabagereka Development Foundation and will be implemented in Buganda Kingdom. The specific focus will be on the districts of Buikwe, Butambala, Kiboga, Rakai, Nakasongola and Kampala.

This partnership aims at ensuring that communities, social institutions and structures practice positive social norms, beliefs and behaviours that protect children in the Kingdom from all forms of violence. In Buikwe, Rakai and Nakasongola districts, the emphasis will be put on child sacrifice. While in other districts, the focus will be on ending violence against children in schools and ending child marriage.

Globally, Violence Against Children (VAC) remains culturally unchallenged. Some harmful practices are perpetrated without the intention of violence but are nonetheless violent in nature. Such practices are deeply embedded in communities’ social norms and are often justified on the grounds of religion, culture or tradition. The multi-dimensional nature of the problem of violence against children calls for a multi-faceted approach. It requires a fundamental change of attitudes and behaviors towards children as persons in their own right.

World Vision views this partnership as one that will reverse child marriages, violence against children in school and child sacrifice.

Using the cultural voice, the Foundation will mobilize and sensitize communities about the need to change the negative social, economic and cultural norms and practices in order to address the violence against children in Buganda.

This will contribute to World Vision’s 5 year Ending Violence Against Children (EVAC) campaign, “It Takes A World” to end violence against children Campaign with a major focus on child marriage, child sacrifice and violence in school.
